How important are backlinks? Google considers a backlink to be a vote pertaining to the relevancy of your website. The more votes you get the higher up the Search Engine Ranking Ladder you climb. Sure their are other variables in the equation but in my opinion, implementing an aggressive back-link campaign is the strongest way to climb the SERP-Ladder!
